What Mediation Is
Mediation is a confidential, structured conversation facilitated by a neutral third party. It helps people move from conflict or misunderstanding to clarity, agreement and a constructive way forward.
It is voluntary, solutions-focused, and designed to create practical commitments that parties can genuinely own. It creates a way forward.
What it is not: Mediation is not an investigation. It is not about deciding who is right. It is not a disciplinary process. It is not a grievance process (although it can help resolve them!).
When Mediation Helps
Mediation is particularly effective for resolving:
- Grievances
- Relationship breakdown
- Tensions between colleagues or managers
- Communication issues
- Team fall-outs
- Concerns that feel “personal” rather than procedural
- Civil/commercial disputes where early resolution is commercially sensible
Why Mediation Works
Mediation works because it creates a confidential space where people speak openly, safely and without judgment. A skilled mediator helps parties explore what they need, what needs to change, and how they want to work together in the future. It avoids blame. It avoids escalation. It restores clarity and control.
What the Mediation Process Looks like?
- Pre-Mediation Meeting – Private and confidential discussions with each party to understand the mediation process and their participation.
- Private Sessions – mediation sessions with each party to understand their concerns, preferred resolution and settlement objectives.
- Joint Session – A structured, facilitated conversation covering issues, needs, misunderstandings and possible ways forward.
- Mix of Private and Joint Sessions – Mediations may involve a mix of private and joint sessions as the conversation between the parties develops.
- Agreement – Parties develop a practical, forward-looking agreement covering behaviours, communication methods, expectations and next steps.
What are the Benefits?
- Promotion of faster resolution
- Reduced cost and disruption
- Improved working relationships
- Stronger team cohesion
- Reduced grievances and ongoing risk
- A culture of early, confident conflict-handling
