Nationals of Jordan required to obtain visitor visas prior to entering the UK

Electronic Travel Authorisation no longer available

Only a small number of existing ETAs may be used no later than 3pm BST on 8 October 2024

AS OF 3 PM BST today 10 September 2024 nationals of Jordan will no longer be able to enter the UK without obtaining visas in advance.

UK Visas and Immigration announced today that Jordanian nationals will be required to apply for and be granted visas prior to entering the UK as visitors or as part of transit to other countries.

This unexpected change comes in response to an increased number of Jordanian nationals travelling to the UK recently. The announcement goes on to suggest that a large number of travellers are entering the UK for purposes not allowed under the visa-free regime. The new measures aim to prevent such breaches in the future and to support the ‘integrity and effective functioning of the Common Travel Area’.

As a result of the change, Electronic Travel Authorisation (‘ETA’) will no longer be available for nationals of Jordan.

Transitional provisions apply, offering a very limited exception to this change only where all of the below apply:

  1. Jordanian national holds a valid ETA before 3 pm BST on 10 September; and
  2. Have a confirmed travel booking prior to 3 pm BST on 10 September 2024; and
  3. Will complete their trip without further rearrangements, to arrive no later than 3 pm BST on 8 October 2024.

NB: Amending the date of travel on a confirmed booking to an earlier date that falls within the transition period after 3 pm on 10 September 2024 will not meet the conditions for the exception to apply.
