2 mins read 21/01/2025

Spotlight on APAC Series: Taiwan

In our spotlight on APAC series, we round up the latest developments across the region. In this post, we focus into the Digital Nomad visa programme introduced for Taiwan.

Introduction of Digital Nomad Visa

Countries in other parts of Asia including Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea introduced digital nomad visa programmes in 2023 and 2024, allowing foreign nationals to work remotely. Taiwan is next in line to announce the roll-out of a Digital Nomad Visa, effective January 2025.

Prospective applicants should be seeking to work for a company outside Taiwan and are to meet one of the following requirements:

  1. There is previous record of the individual having been issued with a digital nomad visa for another country *

  2. In circumstances where the individual is over 30 years old, the annual income earned should be at least USD 40,000 in one of the last 2 years

  3. In circumstances where the individual is between 20 and 30 years old, the annual income earned should be at least USD 20,000 in one of the last 2 years

*For those who have previously obtained digital nomad visas from other countries, reviewing of application will be waived and the visa will be directly processed for them.

Individuals are to submit the application online and present a printed copy of the form to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office. Processing time for the application is about 5 to 8 working days, and upon approval, the visa granted would be 3 months and can be extended up to 6 months. Should individuals opt to work for duration longer than 6 months, they can opt to apply for an Employment Card or Entrepreneur Visa.

Individuals who have this visa are not permitted to work locally in Taiwan. Should they wish to work for a local based company while in the country, they must apply for the relevant work permit with the Ministry of Labour.
