All-new Skills in Demand Visa and updates to Employer Nomination Scheme
In our spotlight on APAC series, we round up the latest developments across the region. In this post, we focus on the recent modifications done by the Australian government, as part of streamlining its skilled migration visa system.
As of December 7th, 2024, updates include a new visa category, Skills in Demand visa, and changes made under the Employer Nomination Scheme.
Skills in Demand (SID) Visa
The SID visa, constituted in subclass 482, replaces the Temporary Skills Shortage visa. Individuals applying for this visa will be entitled to a period of 4 years and 5 years for Hong Kong nationals. Holders of this visa can travel in and out of Australia without limits.
This visa consists of a three-tiered stream system, as per the table below, and is supported with newly implemented requirements:
Tier 1- Specialist Skills Stream |
Tier 2- Core Skills Stream |
Tier 3- Labour Agreement Stream |
No occupational listing is applicable under this Tier.
Individuals under this tier are to earn an annual income of at least AUD 135,000. |
Applications will be reviewed with a revised occupational listing.
Individuals under this tier are to earn an annual income of range from AUD 73,500 to 135,000. |
Focused on individuals earning below AUD 71, 350.
Details under this tier are to be finalised at a later date. |
Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
There is more flexibility for those who are considering for permanent residency under the ENS (constituted in subclass 186). Changes are reflected in the following 2 streams:
Temporary Residence Transition Stream | Direct Entry Stream |
Individuals who are employed full time for at least 2 years with a qualifying visa are eligible to apply for Permanent Residency, unlike previously where they need to work a minimum of 3 years and any change in employment will reset the date
This is also applicable to those earning within the Fair Work Income Threshold, with an age exemption. |
The revised Core Skills Occupations Listing will be applicable in this stream, increasing the number of occupations that are considered compared to the previous listing. |
