Profile: Peter Hunt


Area of expertise/speciality:

As a member of the Senior Management Structure of Her Majesty’s Diplomatic Service, Peter served consecutively as Minister/Counsellor, Consul General and Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Santiago, Chile; UK Director of Trade for Turkey and Consul General In Istanbul, and Consul General in Los Angeles.

In his role in Istanbul, he had overall responsibility for one of the UK’s largest overseas visa-issuing operations, and while serving in Los Angeles was concurrently responsible for UK interests ( primarily trade and investment) in five of the western states of the United States.

Serving in Latin America formed the spine of his diplomatic career and in addition to serving in Chile, he also served in Nicaragua, Venezuela and Uruguay. Earlier in his career he had a number of temporary assignments in West, Central, and Southern Africa.

Peter was made a Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2001, for services to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Recent Notable Experience

  • Peter served as the Managing Director (London) of BritishAmerican Business (BAB) from 2005-2012.  BAB has grown to become the leading transatlantic business organisation dedicated to helping its companies connect and build their business on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • Key to his role was helping to develop a programme of 60 plus topical and relevant events each year, and corordinating a dozen sector-based forums, each led by a company member, which devised about half the programme of events and contributed significantly to the policy initiatives undertaken on behalf of the wider membership.

  • Peter had prime responsibility for advancing these policy initiatives, many of them  by making representations to HM government on a variety of issues- including matters related to the access of highly skilled workers to the UK from outside the EU, changes to the taxation of non-domiciled individuals , and the application of the UK Bribery Act.

 

Interests

Peter is married with four grown-up children. His interests include long distance walking, golf and tennis, as well as reading, music and following his favourite football team.
