Following the announcement in December 2012 on changes to the rules relating to copyright infringement, the IPO has started its consultation on the three new exceptions to this area. Much to the delight of social media based comedians, the new exceptions include parody in addition to private copying and quotation.
The IPO has invited comments on the detail of the drafting of the exceptions and the deadline for responses is 17 July 2013. The three exceptions are likely to come into force in the first half of 2014, rather than October 2013, as initially outlined by the Government.
The above changes will not be the only ones brought into force in relation to copyright infringement. The government’s proposals for the drafting of other exceptions, such as those for text and data mining and educational purposes will follow.
