Is ‘depression’ the new ‘stress’?

Is ‘depression’ the new ‘stress’?  A survey from the European Depression Association (Impact of Depression in the Workplace in Europe Audit (IDEA))   has revealed that one in ten working people surveyed in Europe have taken time off work due to depression.  Of over 7000 people across Europe surveyed, 20% of the respondents had received a diagnosis of depression at some point and it seems that Great Britain had both the highest percentage and the highest number of “days taken during an episode of depression”!  Whilst given the economic climate it is not surprising that depression is on the increase cynics seem to be asking whether some instances of ‘depression’ are now replacing ‘stress’ as the diagnosis of choice on doctors certificates.
