Nanny state – cycling accident are employers to blame?

The employers of a young man involved in a cycling accident en route to work have received a letter from the employee (who thankfully was not injured but whose bike was fatally wounded) holding them responsible for the damage – because they “irresponsibly introduced and promoted a cycle to work scheme”.    The employer in question did nothing more than introduce a policy some years ago, and “promoted” it by putting a notice up in the staff break out area, and circulating two emails (one in 2009 and one in early 2011)!  Was the risk of injury reasonably foreseeable given the dangers of cycling on UK roads?  Possibly but seriously – how far does a blame culture have to go when such an allegation is even in someone’s mind!
