Shared Parental Leave is now well underway. It applies to babies born (or with an expected week of childbirth of) on or after 5 April, and as this financial year progresses employers are likely to see more and more applications for SPL.
If you do not yet have a comprehensive SPL policy in place it is important that this is implemented as soon as possible – the notification and request process is complex and clear guidance will make managing applications much easier.
Equally, if you offer enhanced maternity pay you need to give careful consideration as to how this will be addressed under the new regime. Offering enhanced maternity pay and not offering the same enhancement for shared parental pay may open the doors to claims of discrimination – not to mention damaged employee relations.
If you would like guidance on SPL and how it will impact your organisation please do get in touch with your usual Magrath contact.
- If you would like to purchase a template policy to update your Employee Handbook, these are available as a standalone policy for £150 plus VAT.
