The social networking site has recently signed up to a privacy pact under the California Online Privacy Protection Act, which states that operators of commercial websites and online services, including mobile apps, are required to “conspicuously post a privacy policy” if they collect personal data. The news arises following the recent launch of Facebook’s mobile apps store earlier this month.
So what does this mean for app developers? In a statement made by the Attorney General’s office, it suggests that the platforms must ensure that app developers display their privacy policies in a “consistent location” on the “application-download screen”. They should also consider their obligations to respect consumer privacy and to disclose to consumers what private information they collect, how they use the information, and with whom they share it.
